A new academic chapter
How to study in Germany from India
Studying in Germany can open the door
to international education, new experiences
and professional opportunities.
But planning the process correctly matters.
Your path depends on whether you want
to pursue a Bachelor’s degree,
Master’s degree, doctoral study
or another eligible programme.
Academic admission, APS verification,
language evidence, financial resources
and visa requirements are separate
steps that may overlap.
Start with universities and specific
programmes, not assumptions about
admission or guaranteed visas.
APS India has published changes affecting
particular undergraduate admission
pathways from winter semester 2026/27,
and a dMAT requirement affecting
selected Master’s applicants for
summer semester 2027 and later.
Check the exact rules for your application.
Find the right programme
What can Indian students study in Germany?
Compare universities and programmes
based on academic fit, admission rules,
teaching language, cost and long-term goals.
Bachelor’s degree
Eligibility depends on your school
qualifications and admission pathway.
Some applicants may need a preparatory
programme such as Studienkolleg.
Master’s degree
Admission generally depends on
a suitable previous degree,
relevant subject background and
programme-specific criteria.
Doctoral studies
Research opportunities may involve
supervisors, graduate schools,
structured doctoral programmes
or research employment.
Studienkolleg
A preparatory route for certain
applicants whose school qualifications
do not allow direct degree admission.
Universities
Research-oriented institutions
offering academic programmes
across a wide range of disciplines.
Universities of Applied Sciences
Institutions often emphasising
practical applications, industry
connections and professionally
oriented education.
Verify the institution, programme,
accreditation or recognition status
where relevant, degree awarded,
teaching language and total fees.
Academic requirements
Are Indian qualifications accepted in Germany?
German universities assess whether
your previous education qualifies you
for the degree programme you want to study.
This is not identical to APS document verification.
Indian Class XII qualifications
For admission from winter semester
2026/27 onward, APS India identifies
a minimum overall Class XII score of 70%
for specified undergraduate pathways.
These include certain routes through
Studienkolleg and direct subject-restricted
admission after one successful academic
year of recognised Bachelor’s study.
The additional conditions of each route apply.
Indian Bachelor’s degrees
Master’s applicants should verify that
their prior degree, subject content,
grades and credits satisfy their
chosen programme’s conditions.
University admission is a separate decision
Meeting a general qualification requirement
does not guarantee a place.
Universities may impose additional
programme-specific selection criteria.
Do not assume that every Indian applicant
needs Studienkolleg or that every completed
Bachelor’s degree qualifies for any
German Master’s programme.
Especially important in India
APS Certificate for Germany: What Indian students need to know
APS — the Academic Evaluation Centre —
verifies academic documentation
issued by Indian educational institutions.
The APS certificate is generally relevant
to the German student visa procedure,
subject to applicable exceptions.
What APS does
APS reviews submitted academic
documentation under its procedures
and issues certificates for
successful applicants.
It does not grant admission
to a German university
or decide visa applications.
Choose the correct procedure
APS has different checklists for
Class XII graduates, applicants
with undergraduate study,
graduates and other groups.
APS India introduced the Digital Master Test
(dMAT) as an additional requirement for
selected Master’s applicants whose prior
qualifications fall within specified
engineering, business, management,
commerce, finance and economics fields.
The requirement affects relevant
applications for summer semester 2027
onward, with transitional exemptions
and other conditions published by APS.
It is not a requirement for every
Master’s applicant.
Apply and verify instructions through
APS India’s own website. Do not rely
on private agents claiming guaranteed
certificates or admission decisions.
University applications
How to apply to German universities from India
Application routes depend on
the institution and programme.
Some universities accept direct
applications; others use uni-assist
or require a VPD.
Direct university application
Follow the official university
portal, deadlines, document rules
and programme-specific instructions.
uni-assist
Participating universities may
use uni-assist to evaluate
international applications
before an admission decision.
VPD
A VPD is preliminary review
documentation issued by uni-assist
for specified universities.
You then apply to that university
using the VPD as instructed.
An APS certificate and a uni-assist
VPD have different functions.
Completing one does not automatically
replace the other when both are required.
Language preparation
Do Indian students need German language skills?
Requirements depend on the programme’s
teaching language and admission rules.
English-taught programmes
Universities may require evidence
of English language proficiency
under their own criteria.
Check accepted tests and exemptions.
German-taught programmes
These generally require an accepted
level of German language proficiency.
The exact qualification and minimum
level depend on the institution.
Living in Germany
Even with an English-taught degree,
German can help with housing,
healthcare, part-time employment,
internships and daily life.

Many public degree programmes charge
no standard tuition fees, but
semester contributions apply.
Certain universities, states and
programmes charge tuition.

student living-cost range of about
€900–€1,200, depending on

Proof of financial resources
Blocked account in Germany for Indian students
Students applying for a German visa
generally need to demonstrate
sufficient financial resources.
A blocked account (Sperrkonto)
is one commonly used form of proof.
What is a blocked account?
It is an account intended to provide
evidence of financial resources,
with restrictions on how funds
can be withdrawn.
Is a blocked account always required?
Not necessarily. Depending on the
visa category and applicable rules,
other accepted forms of funding
evidence may exist, such as qualifying
scholarships or commitments.
How much must you deposit?
The applicable proof-of-funds
amount changes over time and can
differ by the purpose of residence.
Check the current requirement
for your exact student visa category
with the German Missions in India.
What should you compare between providers?
- Whether the arrangement is accepted for your case
- Account opening and administration charges
- Funding and international transfer procedures
- Activation after arrival in Germany
- Monthly withdrawal arrangements
- Refund or closure procedures if plans change
- Security, documentation and support
Your actual monthly living expenses,
tuition and initial relocation
costs can exceed the amount
used for visa-related proof.
Budget independently of the
legal minimum.

academic records, admission evidence,
APS documentation where required,
financial evidence, language evidence
and health insurance.

Students need suitable health coverage
and must satisfy the insurance verification
procedures required for university enrolment.

previous coverage and eligibility.
Statutory student insurance

in Germany’s statutory health
insurance system under applicable
student insurance rules.

Certain choices involving exemption
from statutory student coverage
