Understanding the EU Blue Card

What is the EU Blue Card in Germany?

The EU Blue Card is a residence title under Section 18g of Germany’s Residence Act for eligible qualified employment. It can be relevant to professionals moving from India as well as graduates already living in Germany.

It is not simply a reward for having a university degree. Applicants must meet the requirements relevant to their qualifications, job offer, salary and professional situation.

Indian nationals applying from abroad should also check whether a national visa is needed before entering Germany. Applicants already in Germany must follow the requirements applicable to their current residence status.

Important distinction

German Sherpa publishes independent educational information about life and work in Germany. We do not issue visas, act as an immigration authority or guarantee Blue Card approvals.

Official 2026 figures

EU Blue Card Germany: Minimum Salary in 2026

The Blue Card uses gross annual salary requirements. These are not net take-home salaries, and the thresholds are updated annually.

€50,700

2026 standard annual gross salary threshold for qualifying employment.

€45,934.20

2026 lower annual gross salary threshold for qualifying shortage occupations, subject to approval conditions.

€45,934.20

2026 lower threshold for eligible labour-market entrants whose most recent qualifying degree was obtained less than three years earlier, subject to approval conditions.

The lower threshold is not available to everyone

Qualifying for the reduced salary requirement depends on meeting the relevant category’s rules. For lower-threshold applications, approval by the Federal Employment Agency is generally required. Check the current conditions for your case.

Bonuses and variable compensation should not automatically be counted towards eligibility. The competent authorities assess the salary and employment conditions under the applicable rules.

Core requirements

Who can apply for an EU Blue Card?

01 / QUALIFICATION

Eligible qualification

A German degree, a recognised/comparable foreign degree or another qualification accepted under the applicable Blue Card rules. Certain special IT routes exist.

02 / EMPLOYMENT

Specific job offer

A concrete offer or employment contract for qualifying employment in Germany, generally for at least six months, meeting the relevant conditions.

03 / SALARY

Applicable gross salary

The offer must meet the 2026 threshold for the relevant category. Certain lower-threshold categories require Federal Employment Agency approval.

Regulated professions

Doctors and other regulated professionals may need the required licence or evidence that it is forthcoming, in addition to immigration eligibility. Requirements differ by profession.

Academic qualifications

Is an Indian university degree recognised in Germany?

Recognition or comparability of your qualification matters for many Blue Card applications. Don’t assume that a degree is accepted for immigration purposes simply because an employer wants to hire you.

Check the institution and degree

The official anabin database can help with qualification assessment. Depending on your records, an individual Statement of Comparability from the Central Office for Foreign Education (ZAB) may be relevant.

Distinguish academic and professional recognition

Regulated professions can have separate licensing requirements. The Recognition in Germany portal explains procedures by occupation.

Do not submit unnecessary applications

Check which evidence your intended residence route and competent authority actually need before paying for additional recognition procedures.

Living and settling in Germany

Family reunification and permanent residence

Can family members join you?

EU Blue Card holders may benefit from family-reunification provisions. Exact requirements depend on the family relationship and residence situation. Check the responsible authority’s guidance.

When can Blue Card holders seek permanent residence?

Subject to all other legal requirements, a settlement permit may be possible after 27 months of qualifying employment with sufficient basic German language skills (A1), or after 21 months with B1 German. Pension contributions and other conditions matter.

Residence rights aren’t automatic

Time alone does not guarantee a settlement permit. Verify qualifying periods and conditions with your foreigners authority.
